National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11. It was started by former Prime Minister Late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. On May 11, 1998, India received former Prime Minister, late Sw. Under the leadership of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji successfully conducted nuclear tests at Pokhran in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. To commemorate this day, May 11 is celebrated every year as National Technology Day.
This day is celebrated as a celebration of the achievements of Indian scientists and engineers in the fields of science and technology. Its Pokhran is closely related to the nuclear test.
On the occasion of National Technology Day in the President Shri Ram Nath Kovind has issued a message to the countrymen with his official Twitter handle. In his letter, His Excellency has said, ‘Congratulations to all the countrymen on National Technology Day, celebrated on the anniversary of the 1998 nuclear tests.
On this occasion, we appreciate the matchless contribution of the scientific community in making the nation self-reliant. We see science and technology as the primary medium for inclusive growth. All the countrymen are proud of how our scientists and technologists are waging war on the global fight against Covid-19.
On May 11, 1998, it successfully test-fired its Shakti-1 nuclear missile at Pokhran in India. This operation was named Pokharan-II by the government, also known as Operation Shakti codename. The test was conducted at the Pokhran Test Range of the Indian Army based in Rajasthan. Let me tell you that this was the second test done in Pokhran by the Government of India. Earlier in May 1974, Pokhran-I was also tested, the operation which was codenamed Smiling Buddha.
Today is also a special day for these reasons.
The Government of India honors scientists who have established milestones in science every year since 1998 to this day. The main focus of National Technology Day this year has been on ‘commercializing indigenous technology.’ Every year the Technology Development Board of India confers the National Award on this day to Achievers who work in the field of Science and Technology. Today, DRDO tested the Trishul short-range missile that can hit the ground-to-air fast. Not only this, but National Aerospace Laboratories also developed India’s first indigenous aircraft Hansa-1 on this day.
