Hong Kong-China News: What is Disputed Law and Why Police Shower Water and Using Tear Gas Shells on Hong Kong Protesters?

Hong Kong-China News: Hong Kong police fired tear gas shells and water at hundreds of people on the streets on Sunday (May 24) against the strict national security law proposed by China for the city. Supporters of democracy in Hong Kong have strongly opposed China’s proposal last week.

The proposed bill, introduced on the first day of the session of China’s national parliament on Friday 22 May), aims to stop separatists and subversive activities as well as to prevent foreign interference in the semi-autonomous region.

Critics call it against the “one country, two systems” framework that gives the city the freedom that people in the Chinese territory do not enjoy. On Sunday afternoon, protesters dressed in black wore the famous “Shopping District Causeway Bay“. Gathered in and began to protest against the proposed law.

The protesters stood with Hong Kong, liberated Hong Kong and raised slogans like the revolution of our era. The protest is part of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong last month that took the form of violent clashes between police and protesters at times.

China’s dictatorial attitude, disputed bill introduced in parliament for more control over Hong Kong

Earlier, police arrested the iconic activist Tam Tac-chi during the demonstration on the charge of illegal submission. The bill responsible for Sunday’s performance was tabled in China’s national parliament on Friday and is expected to be passed on May 28.

This would abolish Hong Kong law and allow the city government to establish landmass agencies in the city and allow Chinese agents to arbitrarily arrest those who are pro-democracy. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the move a “death knell for high-level autonomy” for which Beijing had promised in 1997.
