Former Team India captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested exchanging the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia this year and India next year.
Former captain of the Indian cricket team Sunil Gavaskar has said that in the event of Coronavirus infection in the country, India can exchange the T20 World Cup with Australia and organize this tournament instead of 2021 this year.
The COVID-19 has stalled sporting events across the world and has also clouded the 2020 T20 World Cup to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15. India has to host the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Gavaskar told India Today, “As we all know, Australia has restricted the entry of foreigners into the country till September 30. The tournament will start in mid-October, so it seems complicated to organize at the moment.
He said, “The T20 World Cup is to be held in India next year. If India and Australia compromise and the number of COVID-19 cases in India stop, they can exchange the tournament. It can happen in India in October-November this year and in Australia around the same time next year.
” The IPL has also been postponed indefinitely, but it is expected to be held in September. “If that happens, the IPL could be held just before the T20 World Cup, so that the players get enough practice,” Gavaskar said. After that, you can organize the T20 World Cup in November and Asia Cup in UAE in December. December is a much better time to host the tournament in the UAE.
Last week, the BCCI suspended the 13th edition of IPL until further notice after the Indian government extended the COVID-19 lockdown till May 3.
“In relation to ICC events, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, we will continue to take advice from experts and authorities, including the Australian government,” ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said.
